Susana Gaudêncio • Portugal.
Lives and works in Porto.

Her work focuses on video animation, sculpture, installation, drawing, and artist publications. Degree in Painting from FBAUL. Master of Fine Arts at Hunter College - City University of New York, with a scholarship from FCG and FLAD. PhD from FBAUL with support from FCT. Research theme: "Imagination Machines. The Utopian Impulse in Contemporary Art".

The latest artistic projects have integrated the relationship between the historical legacy of concepts, such as the utopian impulse (Frederic Jameson), heterotopia (Michel Foucault), the practice of walking, strangeness as strategies to find new possibilities for problematizing utopia, as a critical device of everyday life, eminently political.

She is a member of the collective "Pessoa Colectiva" with Mafalda Santos and "Círculo das Leitoras Peripatéticas" with Susana Pomba and Sofia Gonçalves. She has published, among others, the book "A Time of strangeness facing he world" (2012, Dois Dias ed.); Perpetual Light (2014, EDP Foundation); "Historical Itinerary of the 25th of April"" (2016, Parsifal ed.); "Vernadsky Station" (2017, Two Days ed.); "Restless Pages. Regarding Insubordinate Documents" (2019, Dois Dias ed.).

She co-coordinated the Vernadsky Station Artist Residency and Exhibition project with Soraya Vasconcelos. She curated, as "Pessoa Colectiva", the exhibition "The Principle of Inertia" at the White Pavilion, Lisbon (2012) and the exhibition "The Hand that Holds and Soars in the Air" at Espaço Rampa, Porto (2020); co-curated, with Ana João Romana, the exhibition "Travels of books. The artist book on the 25th anniversary of ESAD.CR", MiMO, Leiria (2015), and with Mário Moura the exhibition ""Restless Pages. Regarding Insubordinate Documents", Espaço Mira, Porto (2016) and at the Maia Biennial, Maia (2021).

She was a professor at ESAD in Caldas da Rainha (IPL), in the Department of Fine Arts (2010-2022). She was coordinator of the Educational Service of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale (2010-2016) and of Casa da Arquitectura – Centro Português de Arquitectura (2017-2020).

She is represented in national art collections: State Art Collection; Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; EDP Foundation; PLMJ Foundation; Porto City Council, etc.
