2SymposioMDPS
Wednesday, 29/04/2026    EAAD | IDEGUI e Laboratório da Paisagem, Guimarães
The School of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Minho, in collaboration with the Landscape Laboratory and the Guimarães 26 – European Green Capital Mission Unit, is organizing the 2nd Symposium on Product and Service Design in Portugal
This event celebrates World Design Day and will take place on April 29, 2026, at the Guimarães Design Institute and the Landscape Laboratory. As Guimarães holds the title of European Green Capital 2026, this year’s theme is particularly timely: Designing the Future of Cities. How do we want the cities of the future to be? What role does design play in building more sustainable, inclusive, and people-centered urban spaces? What solutions are already being developed?

The Symposium will begin at the Landscape Laboratory with the Guimarães Climate Journey - One City, One Planet, an immersive, interactive, and educational experience focused on local environmental best practices, covering topics such as Nature and Biodiversity, Climate Change, Water, Waste Management, Air Quality, and Noise.

In the afternoon, at the Guimarães Design Institute, five panels will bring together professionals and academics to reflect on building urban spaces centered on people and the planet.

The Symposium aims to promote the sharing of scientific and professional knowledge, bridging the gap between academia and industry, and showcasing innovative national projects that drive user-centered solutions for urban environments.

As part of the UC Convida cycle and integrated into the Práticas Oficinais II (Workshop Practices II) course of the LAV degree, the session 'Às voltas com a Madeira' (Working with Wood) will take place on April 14th at 11:00 AM at the Garagem Avenida Textile Workshop.
The session, led by Cristiana Bastos, aims to show how everyone can—even with limited resources and materials—experiment with restoring, conserving, or creating small wooden pieces. Drawing on her daily experience in a restoration workshop, the guest speaker will discuss the characteristics and differences between various types of wood and wood-based materials, as well as accessible materials and simple techniques for experimentation.

Cristiana Bastos
is a self-taught restorer who has dedicated the past fifteen years to furniture restoration and the construction of small wooden pieces, sharing a workspace with two other projects in the field. Her work is driven by a commitment to reuse, zero waste, and the preservation of existing pieces and the memories they often represent. You can explore her work at cupimruim.wordpress.com."

The next session of the UC Convida lecture series, titled “Em Construção” (Under Construction) and part of the Introduction to Construction course, will feature Diogo Aguiar Studio.
The session will take place on April 7, at 4:00 PM, in Auditorium 1 at the Campus de Azurém, in Guimarães.

This lecture will focus on timber construction, exploring its potential in contemporary architecture as a structural system, tectonic expression, and sustainable resource. “Em Construção” is a series of case-study presentations within a real-world architectural context, promoting a critical perspective on how construction decisions — materials, systems, and processes — shape space, comfort, performance, and environmental impact.

Diogo Aguiar Studio (DAS) is an architecture practice founded in Porto in 2016. Its work bridges art and architecture through buildings and spatial installations characterized by a deep focus on materiality, tectonics, and the sensory experience of space. The studio’s work has earned national and international acclaim, including nominations and awards such as the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022, ArchDaily New Practices 2023, and, most recently in 2026, the Portuguese National Wood Architecture Award 2025. Founder Diogo Aguiar graduated from FAUP and balances his practice with curatorial and academic work. He was a co-founder of LIKEarchitects, assistant curator for the Portuguese representation at the Venice Architecture Biennale, and is currently the commissioner for Concreta, co-founder of Galeria de Arquitectura, and an Invited Assistant Professor at FAUP, where he teaches Architectural Design
