Professor at the School of Architecture, Art and Design (EAAD) at the University of Minho, Andreia Garcia is an architect holding a PhD from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon in the field of Architecture, City and Scenic Space. Her doctoral thesis was awarded the Manuel Tainha Prize for the best doctoral dissertation in Architecture in 2015 and published as the book "Espaço Cénico, Arquitectura e Cidade" (2016). Her work engages architectural and spatial practices within a context shaped by accelerated technological change and ecological crisis, focusing on the relationships between architecture, territory, material cultures and ecological transition.
She has taught at the Architectural Association in London and in the Integrated Master’s in Architecture at the University of Beira Interior, where she lectured for nearly a decade and served as Vice-President of the Faculty of Engineering between 2021 and 2025. She has also been invited to teach and lecture at architecture schools and institutions in Madrid, Valladolid, London, São Paulo, Jordan and Vilnius.
Since 2026, she has been an Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the University of Minho (EAAD-UM), where she serves as Director of the PhD Programme in Architecture. Since 2025, she has been a Visiting Full Professor at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. After serving as a collaborating researcher at CIAUD between 2011 and 2015, she was an integrated researcher at the same centre from 2015 to 2023, and subsequently at the CIAUD–UBI hub (2023–2025). Since 2026, she has been an integrated researcher at Lab2PT and a member of the ACTech Research Group and collaborator researcher at CIAUD–UBI.
She is the national coordinator of the European research project InterPED – Regenerating Intermediate Territories through Positive Energy Districts (F-DUT-2023-0191), funded through a competitive European programme and approved under the CCDR-C / CENTRO 2030 framework (CENTRO2030-FEDER-02496600). She has published in international peer-reviewed journals and specialist architecture publications, and regularly participates in national and international interdisciplinary conferences. She writes frequently for specialised magazines, was co-editor of "Hydroreflexivity", an editorial and archival project developed for e-flux Architecture, and is a member of the Scientific Committee of "Obradoiro magazine", a longstanding reference in the dissemination of Galician architecture in relation to culture, territory and society.
Her research and editorial work has been internationally recognised, including selection for the FAD Iberian Awards (Thought and Criticism, 2020). She is the author of the "Sebentas de Projecto / Architectural Notes in Review collection" (#1 Eduardo Souto de Moura; #2 Carla Juaçaba; #3 Álvaro Siza Vieira), as well as the book "40 Days / 40 Days", which critically revisits a research project developed through a series of conversations with architects on alternative ways of understanding architecture’s mediating role in the world, and "Fertile Futures Vol. 1 and "Fertile Futures Vol. 2".
In 2023, In 2023, Andreia Garcia was appointed curator, following a competitive invitation-based selection process, the Official Portuguese Representation at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia with "Fertile Futures", a project addressing the management, protection and transformation of freshwater through a situated reading of the Portuguese territory and its multiple hydro-geographies. In 2025, she curated The "Future is Now" for the Portugal Pavilion at Expo Osaka and "Metabolisms of Repair", the Portuguese Representation at the London Design Biennale.
