On September 21st, the School of Architecture, Art and Design will host the opening of the "REBALANCING STREETS" Exhibition, as part of the European Mobility Week.
The exhibition, which is free to enter, marks the closing of the STREET research project and presents an unprecedented urban diagnosis tool, while also revealing the practical results of the sustainable restructuring of nine national streets.
Street-scale diagnosis
Funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and developed at the Lab2PT laboratory of the University of Minho, the project is led by researchers Ivo Oliveira, Daniel Casas-Valle, and Marcela Percú.
The team developed an innovative assessment tool that integrates environmental, social, and mobility dimensions into a single diagnostic framework. The objective is to translate the abstract goals of the 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into practical solutions applicable to public space planning.
Results from nine national streets
The exhibition focuses on interventions carried out in nine selected Portuguese streets. Through a comparative analysis of the streets' conditions before and after the works, the displayed results demonstrate measurable improvements in citizens' quality of life, the reinforcement of urban biodiversity, and the prioritization of pedestrian circulation.
In addition to disseminating this data, the initiative aims to stimulate public and technical debate on the climate resilience of cities and the replicability of these urban design solutions in other territories.
