The School of Architecture announces the PhD defence by the architect Vanda Maldonado, to be held on June 30 at 2:30 p.m. in room 2.43 of EAUM, Guimarães. The Arquitect Vanda Maldonado will defend the thesis entitled “O homem como um ser em projecto: o espaço doméstico na obra de habitação social de Vítor Figueiredo, 1960-1982s”.
ABSTRACT
Between 1960 and 1982, Vítor Figueiredo developed over three
dozen proposals (between projects and works) for social housing, mostly at
the service of important public and state promotion agencies in Portugal,
such as GTH, HE and FFH. This experience by Vítor Figueiredo, associated,
most of the time, with severe costs and area constraints, represents a
fundamental chapter of Portuguese Architecture of the 20th century that has
never been thoroughly explored before.
Focusing in the domestic space analysis and presenting a
strong documentary component related to architect's assets regarding social
housing, this research aims to demonstrate that Vítor Figueiredo's path was
guided by a strong humanism, assuming a particular place in the context of
the Portuguese architectural production at the time.
The research also aims to go beyond its historical dimension,
either in a broad sense, assuming the lesson of humanism inherent in the work
under study as timeless, or in a more specific scope, leaving clues that perceive
its importance in contemporary thought of the domestic space that may be
useful for future developments.
