Garagem Avenida - Guimarães
The School of Architecture, Art and Design welcomes the Ruins and Fragments exhibition at the Avenida Garage Gallery, curated by Beatriz Duarte and featuring works by artists Ana Rocha, Cristianne Melo, Flora Paim, Lara Teixeira and Martín Hernández Molín.
The exhibition will be on display at Garagem Avenida from 6 to 13 December, with opening hours from Wednesday to Friday, from 14h00 to 17h00. The opening of the exhibition will take place on 6 December at 5pm in the presence of the curator and the artists. On 13 December, the book "Deindustrialisation, still" will be presented.
Ruins and Fragments presents artistic processes and productions developed from activations at Fábrica do Arquinho, in Guimarães, during the first half of 2023. The curatorial project* aims to understand the narratives that this industrial ruin and its vestiges contain and provoke, considering its interstitial condition, between previous industrial use and the future rehabilitation project. The artists' responses to this enquiry encompass various languages - objects, performance recordings, audio recordings, experimental photographs and writing - and are above all a procedural display of the fieldwork carried out in (and on) this factory. The artistic proposals focus on recording the entropy of space, experimenting with the heterotopia of this anti-monumentality and the double gesture of inventing and inventorying, including, in some cases, decomposition and forgetting as intrinsic elements in the construction of the works.
* The exhibition's curatorial research is part of Beatriz Duarte's PhD project in Art Education (i2ADS-FBAUP), funded by the FCT (ref.2021.04620.BD) and entitled "Contemporary heritage re-signified: curatorial strategies and artistic mediation of recent pasts", with scientific guidance from Inês Moreira (CEAA-ESAP) and Thiago Assis (i2ADS-FBAUP).
