Auditório 1 - EAAD
The School of Architecture, Art and Design (EAAD)
announces the PhD public examination in Architecture, specialty of
Architectural Culture, requested by Inês Graça.
The public examination will be held December 5
at 2:30 pm, on Auditorium 1 of building 09 (EAAD), Campus of
Azurém, UMinho. Inês
Graça will defend the thesis entitled “O ciclo construtivo da Casa de Bragança
nos séculos XV e XVI: os seus paços ducais em Guimarães e Lisboa”.
Abstract: This research intends the study of the 14th century manorial
architecture sponsored by the House of Bragança, in a comparative analysis of
the manor houses built by this family during the 15th and early 16th centuries.
In
this period, the House of Bragança built palaces in Barcelos (c.1410),
Guimarães (c.1420), Ourém (c.1440), Porto de Mós (c.1450), Lisbon (c.1500) and
Vila Viçosa (c.1501) which, when analysed together, allow us to identify a
lineage of dwellings designed by the Bragança family according to identical
politico-symbolic motivations, which were reflected in similar principles of
layout and relationship with the surroundings. In this secular trajectory, we
take an in-depth look at the ducal palaces in Guimarães and Lisbon, situated at
the beginning and end of the chronology under study. The Paço dos Duques de
Bragança in Guimarães has been regarded, since the 17th century, in a
recognition reiterated by the Estado Novo, as one of the most important
monuments in Guimarães and the country. Founded in the early decades of the
Quatrocentos, it was the headquarters of the House of Bragança until the
dukedom moved to Vila Viçosa in the following century. The Paço dos Duques in
Lisbon is, still today, a relatively unknown building and generally considered
to have disappeared in the Setecentos, following the earthquake occurred
in 1755.
Built at the dawn
of the 16th century, a time of renewal and reaffirmation of the Duke of
Bragança's power, this ducal palace represents an updating of the premises that
had driven the construction of the ex novo palaces of the House of Bragança, a
change that would be definitively confirmed with the construction of the ducal
palace at Vila Viçosa. The study of the architectural evolution of both palaces
from the period of their foundation to the present day, considering their
successive occupations and interventions, guides the research that we propose
to develop. Based on the typological, morphological and metrical recognition of
these six residences in general, and the analysis of the palaces in Guimarães
and Lisbon in particular, we intend to articulate knowledge from the
disciplinary fields of Architecture and History, establishing extensive links
between the building activity of the Bragança family in its architectural,
symbolic and territorial affirmation components.
