Coordinator of the Advanced Ceramics R&D Lab, aiming to explore the integration of digital additive manufacturing techniques in the architectural design and production processes of ceramic elements for buildings. Coordinator of the Laboratory of Construction and Technology aiming to explore innovative technological, constructive and structural solutions.
Since 1987 he researched in the domain of special structures. After the PhD he started with the field of “Steel and Composite Structures”, progressively devoting his research interests to the area of bridges, particularly in what concerns safety, inspection, assessment and monitoring. Since his involvement with EAAD, he bridges the gap between architecture and structural engineering, promoting the efficient use of the traditional materials and their judicious combination.

Secretary of the Executive Committee of IABMAS - International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (2002-2018). Since 2006 he is the President of the Portuguese Group of IABMAS. In 1997 he founded the Portuguese Steelwork Association.
Prizes and awards: 2008 - Special Service IABMAS Award, in recognition of his outstanding service to IABMAS (International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety) as organizer of the “IABMAS’06 - The Third International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management”. 2008 - Gold medal of the Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland. 2005 - Thomas Fitch Rowland Prize, ASCE - American Society of Civil Engineers, USA.
