Objectives of education

The program aims to present the most relevant perspectives for the analysis of history and artistic culture, always approached from a dialogical perspective. The student will be equipped with the most salient concepts and arguments about artistic culture and its historical and socio-cultural contextualization and will be motivated to experiment and use a critical and sustained discourse about the class contents. This way it will be possible to achieve the learning goals.

Key learning outcomes

- To provide students with the most relevant aspects of the history of artistic culture through reading and discussion of fundamental texts and the analysis of artistic and cultural production;
- To acquire research practices;
- To identify historical and artistic sources;
- To know the artistic and cultural object from a technical, thematic, socio-cultural and iconological point of view, and the issues inherent to its fruition and analysis;
- To value the theoretical discussion in the practices of artistic culture;
- To build a research project/work on the history of artistic culture.

Teaching methods

The course is divided into theoretical classes (15h) and theoretical-practical classes (15h). The theoretical component will use a lecture/presentation based pedagogical model and guided debate, with the aid of audio-visual media and bibliographic references. Theoretical and historical concepts of artistic creation will be presented and debated — the creative act, the art of seeing and interpreting, the art of describing, the aesthetics of reception, learning through art.
The theoretical-practical component provides activities for the development and consolidation of the themes and contents presented through three moments of formal discussion with the support of texts referring to the thematic context of the theoretical program of the CU. The texts will be provided by the teacher and must be analysed by students in the context of autonomous work and in class.
This component will include the development of a project/research and reflection work, individual or collective, which should address the program’s content presented in the theoretical sessions and contemplate its application in a specific pedagogical context. The methodologies used aim at promoting debate, critical reflection and develop work.

Assessment methods

Assessment is mainly continuous, based on the continued appreciation of students' performance and progress. It is subordinated to active participation and timely delivery of the different assessment elements.
The three sessions of guided debate will be essential to assess the ability of argumentation and communication and assess the student's ability to support their answer to the exercises, from a theoretical point of view. Both in the debate sessions and in the project/written work, the ability to critically reflect on the texts and themes analysed and their implications for the practices of the history of artistic culture is valued. The written test will serve to assess the individual acquisition of knowledge and the quality of the construction of arguments and critical thinking.
Final assessment includes:
- Three moments of in-class debate and formal reflection about essays relevant to the programmatic context of the U.C. and participation (10%-30%);
- Written research project/work in the field of Artistic Culture, individual or collective (30%-50%);
- Written test (30%-50%).
