About the course

The Course "Competences in Scientific Research in Architecture, Art and Design" aims to fill the lack of training and deepening of multiple skills that researchers, scholarship holders and students acquire in their short-term internships in the areas of Architecture, Art and Design. This course intends to credit the competences, scientific knowledge and skills acquired during this training. In particular, this course is intended for prospective students (interns) and research fellows, holders of a bachelor's or master's degrees who carry out research activities arising from their integration in the Landscape, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT).

This course will serve as an intermediate training stage, not leading to an academic degree, for those trainees whose horizon is a technical, research or science management career, including those who intend to enter PhD studies in the near future. Additionally, the course intends to solve the problem of mandatory enrolment in a training course by research fellows funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology. To respond to this dynamic universe, the course presents a modular structure of short to medium duration, allowing the objectives and learning outcomes to be adapted to the duration of the stay in the research group. With this non-degree course, it becomes possible to formally certify fundamental skills and the training for research work of these trainees.

Goals

The course aims to enable trainees with scientific, technical and communication competences for the exercise of scientific research activity. The objectives depend on the duration of the stay in the research group and the modules attended. In general, it is intended that the trainees will be able to:

a) Train writing skills and oral presentation of scientific results to the scientific community in the form of poster, oral communications, lectures or scientific reports, among others;

b) Diversify and deepen their knowledge in the specific area in which they develop their research work;

c) To develop socio-behavioural competencies, with the integration in multidisciplinary research and innovation teams, and frequently in collaboration with other research or business entities, both national and international;

d) To acquire knowledge in the area of safety and good practices in the workplace, and to become familiar with the main risks;

e) Obtain training on equipment/instruments and tools for data analysis and bibliography;

f) To reflect on experimental planning, scientific data collection (including ethical issues), as well as its analysis and critical discussion.

This course consists of six levels, depending on the number of modules taken by the student (3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months or 18 months). By the completion of modules, every student gets a Certificate:

1 module: Certificate in Scientific Research Skills in Architecture, Art and Design - level 1

2 modules: Certificate in Scientific Research Skills in Architecture, Art and Design - level 2

3 modules: Certificate in Scientific Research Skills in Architecture, Art and Design - level 3

4 modules: Certificate in Scientific Research Skills in Architecture, Art and Design - level 4

5 modules: Certificate in Scientific Research Skills in Architecture, Art and Design - level 5

6 modules: Certificate in Scientific Research Skills in Architecture, Art and Design - level 6

Modules

Module 1: Writing and oral presentation skills

Module 2: Methods of scientific representation in Architecture, Art and Design

Module 3: Experimental planning and scientific data collection

Module 4: Analysis of scientific data

Module 5: Teamwork and interdisciplinary research

Module 6: Training in planning, management and execution of R&D projects

Admission

The course is open to holders of at least a Bachelor's degree who carry out research activities in the field of Architecture, Visual Arts, Design and related areas. The existence of at least one supervisor from the Research Centre that will host the trainee is a condition for application. The seriation of the candidates will be based on the curricular evaluation by the respective Research Centre.
